Vernon “Buzzy” Edward Almlie was born to Edward and Esther (Wager) Almlie Jan. 16, 1935, in St. Cloud. He attended elementary school in Glendorado, then graduated from Foley High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Next was his master’s degree from Minnesota State University in Winona. He earned his doctorate in education from the University of Montana, Missoula, Montana, in 1975. He died peacefully in his sleep June 28, 2024.
He married Marie Annette Talberg in June 1958 at Glendorado Lutheran Church. Marie passed away April 15, 1992, in Valley City, North Dakota.
He married Glenda Sanford Aug. 12, 1995, at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, North Dakota. Glenda passed away Dec. 24, 2023.
He is survived by his daughter Ann (Jonn) Strausser, of Anamosa, Iowa; sons, William (Lande) Almlie, of Everson, Washington, and Jurgan Almlie, of Ellendale, North Dakota. He is survived by his grandchildren: Matthew, Levi, Shanna, Eleanor and Lillian Iglehart; Isabella Almlie and Kyle Dallman; and Elizabeth, John and Mark Almlie. He is survived by his brother Erling Almlie, of Minneapolis.
He is also survived by his step-children: Sheryl (Michael) Van Scoy of Duluth and Paul Sanford and Ken (Darla) Sanford of Fargo, North Dakota; and the step-grandchildren: Hugh, Elise, and William Van Scoy, and Robert, Sean and Stephen (Toni) Sanford.
He is survived by his sisters-in-law Kathy Olsen, of Excelsior, and Maria Berlin, of St. Cloud, as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation and service will be Saturday, July 13, at First Lutheran Church in Fargo, with visitation starting at 9 a.m. and service at 10 a.m. Burial is 2 p.m. July 20 at Glendorado Lutheran Church in Glendorado.
