The Granite Ridge Conference meet was a good battle May 16 at Milaca High School in Milaca. With only three events left to score, the top four spots were all within four points. Overall, the …

When targets fly, Falcons soar

At the Foley High School clay target team’s final regular season joust May 22 in Monticello, the Falcons took fourth place of eight teams. Although the Falcons are used to finishing with a higher placement, Foley shooters cemented themselves with the top spot in the conference with their performance. Helping the Falcons along to success at the Monticello Rod and Gun Club were medalists Grace Zimmerman, who took third place in the novice division; Bridgett Bursch, who took second place among varsity girls individuals; and Kaden Reding, shooting a 25 straight.

Obliteration through offense

The Foley Lumberjacks entered its game against the Flensburg Falcons May 21 looking to form its first winning streak of the amateur baseball season.   Fifteen hits later, the Lumberjacks earned its second victory in as many days, outpacing the Falcons massively in a 17-0 six-inning drubbing at Foley High School in Foley.

The Foley Falcons have carved out an identity as a hard-to-beat regular season juggernaut. However, Section 6AA remains perhaps the deepest in all of Class AA for a reason, and the current top seed Eden Valley-Watkins showed why in a 6-4 win over the Falcons May 19 at Watkins Elementary School in Watkins.

No shortage of standouts

FOLEY – As parents, community members and a large section of the Foley High School student body watched, the school district hosted its annual Night of Excellence May 21, presenting its activities participants with recognition for the 2022-23 academic year. The afternoon began with an hourlong reception celebrating Paul Backowski, a 2005 Foley High School graduate and the newest inductee into the Foley Athletic Hall of Fame. Backowski was a three-sport athlete, making waves as a 6-foot, 6-inch offensive lineman for the Falcons football team before playing collegiate football for the University of Colorado and North Dakota State University from 2005-08.

The first run is oftentimes the most difficult one. That was not the case for the Foley Falcons baseball team May 12, as a two-run shot from Josiah Petersen two batters into the game gave the team an immediate jolt in a 5-2 victory over the Royalton Royals at Royalton High School in Royalton. “(Petersen) is seeing the curveball better this year,” said Mike Beier, head coach. “Staying back on the ball and driving it to all parts of the field have made him a better hitter this year.”

The teams jockeying near the top of the Minnesota Victory League standings often provide exciting, entertaining amateur baseball games through close competition. The Pierz Lakers and Foley Lumberjacks demonstrated this beautifully May 14, as through eight innings, no runner had made it to home plate in a fierce, unyielding pitching duel.

Osborne wins 100-meter dash

True team is a track and field competition that highlights the strength and depth of an entire team. While there are no individual awards given, key individuals play a significant role in the final team results. On May 9, the Foley High School girls track and field team traveled to Rocori High School for the Section 5AA True Team Meet, where senior Piper Osborne was the only Falcon to win an individual event. Behind the strength of relays, sprints and field events, the Falcons finished fifth in a field of 12 teams.

The Falcons have been playing solid tennis consistently throughout the season, and the past week was no exception. The week’s schedule was booked with six matches along with parents night, where the team celebrated the incredible parents and other family members who have supported the team and helped make the season one to rememb

The boys track and field team traveled to Rocori High School May 9 for the Section 5AA True Team Meet in Cold Spring – a meet that many consider to be especially fun and competitive because everyone scores in each event.  Only two competitors per event are able to compete, each event has 24 participants, and relays have 12 teams. The day started with sunshine but turned quickly to rain and lighting, causing a delay in the meet. Even with challenges with the weather, the boys competed with grit.

Falcons card 3rd-place finish

The Foley boys golf team is hoping their recent Granite Ridge Conference meet is a sign of things to come as the section meet looms. Though teams in the GRC are finding it difficult to knock off Albany, Foley made progress May 12 in a conference competition at Spring Brook Golf Course in Mora. Led by Tommy Smith’s 79, Foley tied for third with Cathedral and the host Mustangs with a score of 330. Albany continued its GRC dominance, placing first with a 325.
