FOLEY – Even as it was the weekend, Foley High School student Laura Dohrmann spent most of the day Jan. 29 checking her email. The specific message she was waiting for did not arrive until 6 p.m., but when it arrived in her inbox that evening, it proved to be a monumental moment in Dohrmann’s athletic career.

FOLEY – The thrill of competition and a shared goal of success drives athletes to perform at their highest level and grow continually over the course of a campaign. Such was the case for the Foley High School winter sports programs, who capped an exciting season with a wide range of athletic achievements.

Falcons aim to rectify abrupt endings

FOLEY – The past four seasons have been a rollercoaster for the Foley High School Falcons baseball program. The Falcons clinched their first-ever trip to the Minnesota State High School League Baseball State Tournament in 2019, a landmark campaign marked by clutch performances and memorable games. Unfortunately, Foley could not look to repeat its success in 2020, with the coronavirus pandemic wiping out the spring season, and the 2021 and 2022 Falcons teams failed to reach the final stage, combining to go 38-7 before suffering heartbreaking losses in the Section 6AA playoffs.

The Falcons hosted all eight of the Granite Ridge Conference teams for an indoor meet March 30 at the Foley High School fieldhouse in Foley. The boys squad placed second overall as a team with just an eight-point margin between the first-place team. Ethan Novak placed first in the pole vault with a winning height of 11 feet, 6 inches and also placed sixth in the high jump. Teagan Duevel placed first in the high jump with a height of 5-8 and also placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 43-9.

Finding a consistent footing in the sport of archery can be difficult, but the Foley Falcons have done so behind unimpeded growth in participation and as skilled archers. Foley once again displayed this impressive improvement at the Minnesota Region 3 Archery Tournament, as the Falcons snagged 11th out of 14 high school teams March 18 at Becker Public Schools in Becker.

The Foley Falcons softball team have often struggled to get over the hump, but it is hard not to be excited about what Foley is bringing to the field this spring. While many teams on the Falcons schedule are static in nature, with expected strengths and weaknesses, Foley feels it has the roster capable of being adaptable game by game.

While focusing on the details and subtle improvements to shooting are of grand importance for Minnesota high school archery teams, it is all in the hopes of excelling when one yearly archery extravaganza rolls around: the Minnesota National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament.

Sign of the times

The first sign of spring sports arrived March 23, as the Foley Falcons boys and girls track and field teams took part in its first time trials. The Falcons hosted Little Falls, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Mayer Lutheran and Princeton at Foley High School in Foley

The tundra-like ebb and flow of the Minnesota winter has made March seem a lifetime away from spring. However, the calendar does not lie, as Minnesota State High School League member schools get started with spring sports practices in anticipation of another season.
